Dr. Martens Celebrates 65 Years of the Iconic 1461 Shoe
Dr. Martens is marking a significant milestone with the 65th anniversary of the beloved 1461 shoe, a classic style that has garnered a dedicated following over the decades. To commemorate this occasion, the brand is launching a limited-edition version of the iconic three-eyelet Oxford shoe.
A Brief History of the 1461 Shoe
Launched just one year after the iconic 1460 boot, the 1461 shoe quickly became synonymous with durability and comfort. This versatile Oxford style was introduced on April 1, 1961, and has remained popular among diverse demographics for its classic aesthetic and comfort. Its air-cushioned sole and signature yellow welt stitching make it a staple in many wardrobes.
Limited-Edition Release
In celebration of its 65th anniversary, Dr. Martens’ Made in England factory has crafted a special edition of the 1461. This version features Classic Calf leather sourced from the esteemed Leeds-based tannery C. F. Stead, ensuring both quality and a touch of exclusivity.

Design Features
The “sepia gray” hue of this full-grain leather shoe is achieved through a natural blend of oils and waxes, allowing the shoe to develop a unique character over time. Detailed with antique gold eyelets and round wax laces, this limited-edition shoe also sports a distinctive swing tag that honors England’s Cobb Lane factory.
Expanded Collection
This limited edition is the latest addition to Dr. Martens’ offerings from the Northamptonshire factory this year. The sepia gray Classic Calf leather is also being utilized for the 1460 boot, reflecting the brand’s commitment to craftsmanship and quality. The Oxford shoe retails for $240, while its boot counterpart is priced at $280.

A Legacy of Craftsmanship
Ramona Riedzewski, the head of archive at Dr. Martens, stated, “2026 marks 65 years since the first 1461 shoe rolled off the production line in Wollaston, Northamptonshire. For over six decades, this classic silhouette has transcended its workwear roots and found a place in various facets of life, including school, work, interviews, and even weddings.”
Continuing the Celebration
With this anniversary, Dr. Martens continues to celebrate its rich history and craftsmanship. The brand previously marked the 65th anniversary of the iconic 1460 boot, further solidifying its legacy as a leader in footwear design.
