Cristiano Fagnani: From Nike to Off-White’s Visionary Leadership
Cristiano Fagnani’s journey in the fashion industry began in 2016 when he first crossed paths with the late Virgil Abloh at Nike. An Italian native, Fagnani had established himself at the sports giant over two decades, focusing on high-profile collaborations that shaped the brand’s direction.
One of these collaborations included “The Ten,” a groundbreaking collection of 10 footwear designs co-created with Abloh, which hit the market in 2017. This venture not only showcased innovative design but also blossomed into a strong partnership between the two creative minds.
A Transformative Call to Action
Fagnani recalls the pivotal moment when Abloh invited him to join his fashion label, Off-White. “I was prepared to stay in the U.S. indefinitely,” he shared. “But Virgil’s call changed everything. He needed someone with a strong connection to Italy, and it took me no time to realize this was the opportunity I had been waiting for.” This marked the start of a new chapter in his career.
Leading Off-White with Purpose
Since joining Off-White, Fagnani has been driving the brand’s vision and growth, becoming its CEO in 2023. His focus is clear: to honor Abloh’s legacy while reshaping the brand’s narrative. He recently launched “10 x 10: Off-White Icons Reimagined,” a project inviting ten diverse creatives to reinterpret the brand’s iconic pieces.
Cultural Influence and Legacy
Fagnani emphasizes that Off-White stands at the intersection of youth culture, luxury streetwear, and high fashion. He views the brand as a platform for exploring and cultivating new ideas, likening Abloh to a maestro guiding a cultural orchestra. “He had an exceptional ability to read culture and invite collaboration,” he noted.
Creativity and Collaboration in 10 x 10
The “10 x 10” initiative features notable contributions from creatives like Kid Cudi, who reimagined the “Out of Office” sneaker, and stylist Veneda Carter, who designed a unique take on the Meteor Metal women’s shoe. Fagnani is proud to collaborate with individuals who share a connection with the brand and resonate with its mission.
Looking Ahead: Events and Evolution
Products from the “10 x 10” collection will debut every two months over the next 18 months, with special showcases in influential cities during key cultural events. Highlighted cities include New York during the Frieze art fair and Paris during Men’s Fashion Week. These events will honor Abloh’s vision while introducing Off-White’s innovative designs to a broader audience.
Building on a Legacy
After Abloh’s passing in 2021, there was uncertainty surrounding Off-White’s future. However, under the ownership of Bluestar Alliance, which acquired the brand in 2024, the legacy continues to thrive. Fagnani praised Bluestar for their commitment to preserving the brand’s core values and its dedicated team, many of whom have worked alongside Abloh.
Fagnani encapsulates the team’s dedication: “For us, it’s not just a job; it’s a commitment to honor Virgil’s legacy and inspire future generations.” As Off-White evolves, it remains a beacon of innovation and cultural relevance in the fashion world.
