PS5 Leads Resident Evil Requiem Sales as PC Assumptions Challenge Console Relevance
There’s been ongoing chatter within the gaming community suggesting that consoles might be losing their foothold in the market. This narrative has gained traction, particularly among vocal PC players.
Recently, the launch of Resident Evil Requiem reignited these discussions, as speculation arose about the game’s sales performance on different platforms. Initial reports indicated that PC sales were significantly outperforming those on the PS5.
Much of this speculation stemmed from Capcom’s statements indicating that a large portion of its sales came from PC platforms, referencing data from its latest quarterly report largely derived from legacy titles. This stirred further dialogue surrounding the perceived dominance of PC gaming.
“PS5 was also the lead platform for Requiem in the US during February, even though it made up below 50% of the game’s US full game dollar sales.” – Mat Piscatella, Circana Retail Tracking Service
Although many assumed that the high player counts on Steam meant PC led Resident Evil Requiem sales, the reality paints a different picture. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella clarified that in the US market, the PS5 was indeed the “lead platform” for the title, surpassing PC sales by a noteworthy margin.
It’s important to recognize that the PS5’s dollar share, while less than 50%, still contributed to the overall sales mix that included Xbox Series X|S and other platforms. This highlights the diverse market for multi-platform titles.
Historically, PlayStation has been the home of the Resident Evil series, except during the PS2 era when Capcom surprisingly pivoted towards the GameCube. With Resident Evil Requiem already recording 6 million sales worldwide, it stands as the fastest-selling title in the series, suggesting the franchise is not only maintaining its legacy but potentially expanding its reach.
The takeaway is clear: consoles remain a vital part of the gaming landscape, and Capcom’s marketing strategies are effectively broadening the appeal of their games to a wider audience. Success in the gaming world doesn’t need to come at the expense of traditional console platforms.
