Health Concerns for the Former President
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is currently receiving treatment for pneumonia in an intensive care unit at a hospital in Brasilia. This alarming news was confirmed by the hospital on Friday.
Severity of the Condition
Dr. Brasil Caiado, one of Bolsonaro’s physicians, informed the media that the 70-year-old’s medical condition is serious, particularly given his age. “Pneumonia in patients over 70 is always serious because it can lead to septicemia, which could progress to a more severe state,” Caiado stated.
Family Updates on Medical Status
The former president’s son, Flávio Bolsonaro, reached out to the public via social media, announcing that his father was being transferred from prison to a hospital after experiencing chills and vomiting. He expressed hope for his father’s recovery, stating, “I ask for prayers that it not be anything serious.”
Background on Legal Troubles
Jair Bolsonaro is serving a 27-year sentence for attempting a coup after being convicted by a panel of Supreme Court justices last year. His hospitalization comes after he displayed symptoms such as high fever, low oxygen levels, and chills, prompting a series of medical examinations that resulted in a diagnosis of bronchopneumonia, likely due to aspiration.
Current Hospitalization Details
The DF Star Hospital released a statement indicating that Bolsonaro is hospitalized in the intensive care unit, receiving intravenous antibiotics and non-invasive clinical support. Dr. Caiado mentioned that it’s unlikely Bolsonaro would return to prison anytime soon, as his treatment requires the resources available only in a hospital setting.
Claims of Mistreated Sentence
Bolsonaro’s family has repeatedly argued that the former president is being subjected to mistreatment and inadequate medical attention during his imprisonment. One of his sons, Carlos Bolsonaro, even suggested on social media that “the system is literally and insistently trying to kill” his father, though the Supreme Court has dismissed these claims and denied requests for house arrest.
International Attention and Legal Battles
Bolsonaro has faced multiple legal challenges, including recent convictions related to attempts to undermine Brazil’s democratic system following his 2022 election defeat. His case has drawn international attention, notably after former U.S. President Donald Trump criticized the proceedings, labeling them a “witch hunt.” As of now, Bolsonaro continues to deny any wrongdoing, amidst multiple allegations including leading an armed criminal organization.
