Call for Stricter Regulations on Sunbed Use by Minors
Dublin’s councilor emphasizes the dangers of sunbeds for youths under 18.
Concerns Over Underage Sunbed Use
In recent discussions, there has been a growing call for a crackdown on “rogue operators” who permit under-18s to utilize sunbeds. This illegal practice poses significant health risks for young people, sparking outrage within the community.
Advocacy for Tighter Restrictions
Dublin West Aontú councillor Ellen Troy has been vocal in her demands for stricter regulations regarding sunbed accessibility to minors. She highlighted the ongoing issue of unscrupulous providers who disregard the law, making sunbeds available to those under the legal age.
Understanding the Risks
While adults can navigate the potential pros and cons of sunbed use, Troy stresses that young people are particularly vulnerable to the dangers. “The ultraviolet (UV) light plays a crucial role in the development of melanomas and non-melanoma skin cancers,” she stated, aiming to raise awareness among youth.
The Harmful Effects on Young Skin
Troy articulated her concerns about the severe damage that sunbeds can inflict on young skin. She emphasized that the cosmetic appeal of a tan can be dangerously misleading, potentially leading to long-term health consequences. “The damage to the skin is horrific,” she noted.
Exploitation of Young Consumers
Alarmingly, some rogue operators have resorted to advertising ‘happy hours’ and offering free sessions to entice young individuals into using their tanning services. This alarming trend further complicates efforts to protect vulnerable youths from harmful UV exposure.
The Importance of Regulation
Troy pointed out that without stringent regulations, children can easily find themselves in tanning establishments that are proliferating around the area. These locations may allow minors to undergo multiple tanning sessions in a short period, which can result in severe damage to their skin.
