Kering Launches CRAFT Initiative to Empower Emerging Chinese Designers
Gucci’s artistic director Demna, alongside Chinese couturier Guo Pei, leads a new 12-member advisory board for Kering’s innovative program, CRAFT (Creative Residency for Artisanship, Fashion, and Technology). This initiative aims to spotlight and nurture the next generation of creative talent from China while fostering collaboration between China and Europe.
Transforming Creative Landscapes
Unveiled last November by Kering’s CEO, Luca de Meo, in partnership with Shanghai Fashion Week, CRAFT is designed to elevate design, craftsmanship, innovation, and future business models in fashion. This initiative seeks to cultivate an ongoing dialogue and exchange of ideas between talented individuals from both regions, enriching the global fashion landscape.
Support for Chinese Creatives
Demna expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “The creativity, innovation, and technical know-how in China are fascinating to me. I’m eager to support the next generation of Chinese creatives and witness how they will help shape the future of fashion.” His perspective highlights the importance of nurturing local talent to drive global industry trends.
Bridging Cultural Aesthetics
Guo Pei emphasized her commitment to cross-cultural collaboration, stating her eagerness to “break down the aesthetic boundaries between East and West.” This sentiment reflects the program’s goal of blending cultural influences and fostering diverse artistic expression in the fashion industry.
Application Process and Selection
The advisory board will soon select approximately 10 residents for the inaugural CRAFT program. With applications open until March 1, the chosen participants will be announced during Shanghai Fashion Week, scheduled for March 25 to 31. This exciting opportunity is designed to empower emerging designers and provide them with invaluable resources and mentorship.
Kering’s Commitment to Emerging Talent
According to Kering, “Strengthening support for emerging talent and fostering closer ties between Chinese and international creative communities, Kering CRAFT aims to accelerate the next generation of Chinese designers.” The program spans major fashion capitals like Milan, Paris, and Shanghai, providing a comprehensive platform for growth and development.
Expert Guidance from Industry Leaders
The advisory board includes notable figures such as Cai Jinqing (President of Kering Greater China), Dennis Chan (founder of Qeelin), and various influential voices from fashion and sustainability. Their collective expertise will shape the program’s vision and mentoring approaches, ensuring a robust framework that supports the emerging talent.
Aiming for a Sustainable Fashion Ecosystem
Kering’s residency promises hands-on learning, expert mentorship, and cultural exchange, with the goal of advancing craftsmanship and innovation. Ultimately, CRAFT aspires to support the emergence of Chinese brands that are deeply rooted in local culture while resonating on a global scale, paving the way for a sustainable fashion ecosystem.
