Hermès Bids Farewell to Véronique Nichanian at Paris Fashion Week
PARIS (AP) — As Paris Fashion Week menswear approaches its final weekend, Hermès celebrated a significant transition. On Saturday, Véronique Nichanian presented her last men’s collection after an impressive 37-year tenure at the helm of the brand’s menswear. Following the show, she graciously stepped forward to receive a standing ovation from a captivated audience.
A Spotlight on the Venue
The Fall-Winter 2026 collection was unveiled at the illustrious Palais Brongniart, the historic location of the former Paris stock exchange. This iconic setting provided an elegant backdrop for Nichanian’s farewell show, enhancing the overall experience with its rich history.
Star-Studded Front Row
The front row of the show was a diverse mix of Hermès executives and notable figures from the entertainment industry. Among the attendees were singer Usher, spotted mingling with Hermès executive chairman Axel Dumas, as well as rapper Travis Scott and actors James McAvoy and Chace Crawford. Renowned designer Paul Smith also graced the event, showcasing the event’s broad appeal.
Understated Elegance Defined the Collection
Nichanian’s runway creations epitomized the material-driven, understated aesthetic that has long characterized Hermès men’s fashion. Models showcased silk turtlenecks paired with leather trousers, set against a sophisticated palette of navy, black, and taupe. The collection emphasized warmth and texture without excessive embellishments, aligning perfectly with the brand’s identity.
Incorporating Archive Inspirations
The runway featured several looks that paid homage to Hermès’ rich history, with archival pieces thoughtfully integrated into the collection. Highlights included a stunning navy leather suit adorned with topstitched pinstripes first introduced in 2003 and a mocha calfskin jumpsuit from 1991. These nods to the past added depth and continuity to the collection.
Bold Accents Amid Classic Tones
While the collection primarily showcased muted tones, color made a striking entrance through controlled bursts of orange and yellow jackets that punctuated the darker ensembles. One standout piece was a glossy khaki crocodile-skin suit, which presented an eye-catching contrast to the overall subdued palette, demonstrating Nichanian’s creativity and craftsmanship.
Looking Ahead: Grace Wales Bonner Takes the Helm
In a significant announcement last October, Hermès revealed that London-based designer Grace Wales Bonner will succeed Nichanian. The founder of her eponymous label is set to unveil her debut Hermès menswear collection in January. This appointment marks a historic moment, as Wales Bonner will become the first Black woman to lead a major fashion house. While Nichanian transitions to overseeing men’s accessories and silk, Hermès looks forward to a new chapter in its storied menswear legacy.
