Jackson County Extends Property Tax Payment Deadline

Jackson County residents can breathe a sigh of relief as the payment deadline for property taxes has been extended to January 31, 2025. This decision comes in light of recent mailing delays that affected many taxpayers.

    Reason for the Extension

County Executive Phil LeVota announced the extension during a news conference, attributing the delays to a late mailing process. Traditionally, property tax bills are sent out in mid-November, but for 2025, this did not occur until December 15. Many residents expressed concerns about receiving their bills in time to meet the original December 31 deadline.

    Accountability and Fairness

LeVota emphasized that the responsibility for these delays lies within the county government, not the taxpayers. “The buck stops with me,” he stated, reiterating that residents should not suffer penalties for circumstances beyond their control. The extension aims to ensure fairness and accountability, offering residents a reasonable opportunity to fulfill their tax obligations.

    Important Dates and Payment Methods

As part of the extension, property tax payments can now be made in person until January 30. For those opting to mail their payments, they must be postmarked by January 31. Notably, there will be no penalties or interest assessed for payments made by the end of January, which applies exclusively to 2025 property tax bills.

    Response from Residents

Prior to the announcement, some residents reported not receiving their property tax bills or having questions about their amounts owed. The extension has been welcomed as a necessary relief for those who faced difficulties during the holiday season.

    Support for Taxpayers

LeVota acknowledged the stress that comes with holiday obligations and assured seniors and families on fixed incomes that they would not be unfairly penalized due to the county’s delays. “This decision is about making sure taxpayers are treated fairly,” he stressed.

    Moving Forward

The commitment to improve taxpayer services is evident in the county’s actions. LeVota has promised ongoing efforts to enhance communication and ensure future tax processes are handled more efficiently. As Jackson County works toward rebuilding trust, residents can look forward to continued improvements in local government operations.
