Fraud Case Overview
Jakkaphong Anne Jakrajutatip, the former CEO of JKN Global Group and the Miss Universe Organization, has been sentenced to two years in prison following a significant fraud case. The Thai court found her guilty of deceiving investors, leading to a loss of approximately 30 million baht (around $930,000).
Court Ruling and Sentencing
On Friday, the Phra Khanong Tai District Court issued its ruling, identifying both Jakrajutatip and JKN Global Group as accomplices in the fraud under Thai law. The company was additionally fined 40,000 baht, while Jakrajutatip received a two-year prison sentence without the possibility of probation.
Jakrajutatip’s Absence and Escape
Notably absent from the court hearing, Jakrajutatip is rumored to have converted approximately 6 billion baht into cryptocurrency. She is believed to have fled Thailand, allegedly with the help of a former business associate named Cantu, and is currently thought to be residing in South America.
Allegations from the Plaintiff
The case stems from accusations made by Dr. Raviwat Maschamadol, who claimed that Jakrajutatip and JKN had misled him through fraudulent representations. Between July 24 and August 8, 2023, they allegedly provided false information while concealing JKN’s financial troubles, convincing him to invest in their bonds despite knowing the company could not fulfill repayment obligations.
Court’s Findings on Misappropriation
The court concluded that Jakrajutatip and her company had misappropriated the 30 million baht from Dr. Maschamadol through deceptive means, ultimately leading to the ruling against them.
Previous Legal Tensions
On November 25, an arrest warrant was issued for Jakrajutatip after she failed to attend a hearing at the South Bangkok Criminal Court. The judge noted her absence seemed to be an attempt to evade justice, intensifying the legal challenges she faces.
Jakrajutatip’s Background and Future Impact
At 46 years old, Jakrajutatip is regarded as a prominent transgender businesswoman in Thailand. She previously gained recognition as the third-richest transgender person globally, with an estimated net worth of $210 million as reported by Forbes in 2020. However, ongoing financial difficulties at JKN have resulted in multiple legal disputes and her recent resignation as CEO of the Miss Universe Organization on June 20.
