India Denounces Pakistan’s Political Turmoil at the UN Security Council
On Tuesday, India strongly rebuked Pakistan during a session at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), highlighting the connection between Islamabad’s internal political chaos and its persistent history of cross-border terrorism. The Indian delegation, led by Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni, focused on the recent jailing of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and the military’s influence in orchestrating a “constitutional coup” through the controversial 27th amendment.
Imran Khan’s Incarceration: A Symbol of Political Crisis
While addressing the UNSC Open Debate on “Leadership for Peace,” Ambassador Parvathaneni shed light on Khan’s imprisonment due to allegations relating to a EUR 190 million corruption case, which dates back to August 2023, as well as his trials under the Anti-Terrorism Act stemming from protests on May 9, 2023. Notably, concerns have been raised by UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Alice Jill Edwards, regarding Khan’s alleged mistreatment in Adiala Jail.
Pakistan’s Democratic Downfall
Ambassador Parvathaneni remarked, “Pakistan has a unique way of respecting the will of its people — by jailing a Prime Minister and banning the ruling political party.” He criticized the military’s role in altering Pakistan’s democratic structure through the 27th amendment that grants lifetime immunity to its Chief of Defence Forces, Asim Munir.
Rejecting Pakistan’s Claims on Jammu and Kashmir
India firmly rejected Pakistan’s claims regarding Jammu and Kashmir, labeling them as “unwarranted.” The Indian representative emphasized this obsession with India signifies Pakistan’s larger agenda to disrupt regional peace. “Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh are integral parts of India,” he stated, stressing the importance of recognizing India’s sovereignty.
Pakistan’s Sponsorship of Terrorism
Ambassador Parvathaneni highlighted Pakistan’s notorious history of supporting terrorism, which he cited as justification for India’s decision to put the Indus Waters Treaty on hold. He referenced the tragic Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025, where 26 civilians lost their lives. The ambassador underlined that Pakistan has violated the Treaty’s spirit multiple times by instigating wars and terrorism against India.
Call for UNSC Reform
While addressing the issues with Pakistan, India also urged the need for comprehensive reforms within the UNSC. The Indian envoy characterized the existing structure of the Council as obsolete, unable to meet the demands of contemporary geopolitics. He quoted UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres: “We can’t create a future fit for our grandchildren with systems built for our grandparents,” advocating for immediate reform discussions.
India’s Commitment to Global Peacekeeping
India has long championed a more representative and effective UNSC, promoting principles of transparency and accountability. The nation remains committed to enhancing its role in UN peacekeeping efforts, reaffirming its belief that a reformed Security Council will better address global challenges and enhance international collaboration.
