Remembering Paul Costelloe: The Iconic Irish Fashion Designer

Paul Costelloe was a defining figure in the world of fashion, paving a unique path as an Irish designer with a global impact. His career took him from the streets of Dublin to the fashion capitals of Paris, Milan, and New York, where he made a name for himself by dressing some of the most notable figures, including Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Deep Connection to Irish Culture and Linen

Rooted in Ireland’s rich textile heritage, Costelloe had a profound appreciation for local materials such as wool and particularly linen. Despite the rise of synthetic fabrics, linen remained an essential fabric in his collections. The fashion industry rediscovered linen after the oil crisis of the 1970s, which made Costelloe’s commitment to this natural fiber even more significant.

    A Long and Successful Career

Costelloe passed away at the age of 80, having successfully run his label for an impressive 47 years. In October 2025, he showcased his final collection at the inaugural Irish Fashion Week in Dublin, marking the end of a remarkable journey. During this time, Ireland transformed from a nation struggling with poverty to a prosperous country, and Costelloe’s wit often shone through his critiques of local fashion.

    Tailoring and Versatile Styles

While known for his tailored pieces, Costelloe was adept at creating both daywear and elegant evening attire. His designs were not only practical but often grand, leading him to design uniforms for prestigious organizations such as the 2004 Irish Olympic team and Aer Lingus. His use of linen was distinctive, with many garments woven, dyed, and printed in Northern Ireland.

    Royal Patronage and International Recognition

In 1983, Costelloe’s career took a pivotal turn when a member of Princess Diana’s staff discovered his boutique in Windsor. Discreetly summoned to Kensington Palace, he found himself designing linen dresses that would eventually grace the world’s media. His collaboration with Diana continued until her untimely passing in 1997, adding to his impressive portfolio that also included major showcases at London Fashion Week.

    Early Life and Education

Born in Dublin to a family with a rich cultural background, Costelloe’s mother hailed from the Bronx, further enhancing his Irish-American identity. His father, a talented tailor, encouraged his artistic aspirations, allowing him to explore his creativity from a young age. Opting for a career in fashion, he pursued studies at the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in Paris before immersing himself in the vibrant fashion scenes of Milan and New York.

    Legacy and Family

Costelloe’s influence on the fashion industry remains profound, as he successfully merged Ireland’s artisanal tradition with contemporary styles. He remained engaged with the fashion community, frequently cycling between his studios in London and Dublin. In his personal life, he shared a fruitful partnership with his wife, Anne, creating a large family that included seven children, many of whom continue his legacy within the fashion industry.

Paul Costelloe leaves behind a rich legacy as an Irish fashion icon. He is survived by his beloved family and a lasting mark on the world of fashion.

Paul Costelloe, fashion designer, born 23 June 1945; died 21 November 2025.
