Nina Christen: From Eccentric Shoe Designs to Independent Brand
Nina Christen has dedicated the past decade to crafting some of the most innovative shoes in luxury fashion, including the iconic Puddle Boots from Bottega Veneta and the unique Balloon Pumps by Loewe. Now, she is stepping into the limelight to forge her own path in the fashion industry.
Taking the Lead at Dior
Currently, Christen holds the title of design director for footwear at Dior, collaborating with former Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson. This role marks a significant milestone in her career as she prepares to unveil her very own brand, Christen, with the first store set to launch in Paris in 2026.

In Christen’s own words, “I like being in the spotlight. Sometimes I felt like nobody knew I designed a shoe, so it feels nice to finally get that recognition.” Her ambition to launch her own label stems from a desire for creative freedom, allowing her to refine her designs over an extended period without the constraints of collaborating for other brands.
A Unique Creative Vision
The designer emphasizes her goal of purity, simplicity, and technical detail, all while using luxurious materials. “When you work for brands, you collaborate and adapt your vision to the creative director,” she explains. “I wanted something where I could do what I wanted.”
Building a Strong Following
With over a decade of experience at notable fashion houses such as Saint Laurent, Celine, and Dries Van Noten, Christen’s reputation is solidified. She’s won over clients from various realms, including celebrities like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Victoria Beckham. Prestigious retailers such as Bergdorf Goodman, Selfridges, and Mytheresa have quickly embraced her solo efforts.

Navigating Challenges as a Female Founder
While Christen’s journey is inspiring, launching an independent footwear brand can pose unique challenges, particularly for female entrepreneurs. Exploring the nuances of a woman’s perspective on design, she states, “As a woman designing women’s footwear, I test every pair myself. I am relentless about achieving the perfect fit.” This commitment resonates with women who desire comfort paired with sophistication in their footwear.
Future Plans and Expansion
Looking ahead, Christen’s ambitions extend beyond footwear. Although shoes will remain the core product, she is eager to diversify her offerings to include categories such as denim and jewelry. With a store launch slated for the Rue de la Paix in Paris, her sights are already set on the US market, where she sees significant potential. “My designs for Bottega always received a huge response in the US,” she notes.
Balancing her contributions to Dior with her brand’s growth, Christen emphasizes, “My brand is my life project.” With her unique vision and dedication to quality, she is poised to make a lasting impact on the luxury fashion landscape.
