Concerns Over Ghana’s Defence Leadership Vacuum
Rev Ntim Fordjour and the late Dr Edward Omane Boamah
Urgent Call for Leadership
The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, has expressed serious concerns regarding the absence of a substantive Minister of Defence in Ghana. He warns that this situation poses a significant threat to the nation’s security and territorial integrity.
Allegations of Reckless Inaction
In a statement shared on his X page on October 26, 2025, Rev Fordjour criticized President John Dramani Mahama for what he termed “reckless inaction.” He highlighted the critical nature of having a capable leader heading the Ministry of Defence, especially during a time of rising security challenges.
Security Risks Underscored
“Nearly three months without a substantive defence minister is a dangerous gamble and a reckless compromise of our territorial integrity,” Rev Fordjour stated. He underscored the alarming deterioration in the nation’s security, citing locations such as Gbenyiri, Sampa, and Bawku, where instability has prompted over 23,000 citizens to flee to neighboring countries as refugees.
Questioning President’s Hesitation
Rev Fordjour continued by questioning why President Mahama has been hesitant to appoint a qualified successor to the late Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, who tragically lost his life in a military helicopter crash in August 2025, alongside other notable figures.
Calls for Immediate Action
In light of these issues, the MP urges immediate action from the President. He believes that appointing a competent Minister of Defence is essential for retooling the Ghana Armed Forces and ensuring the country’s territorial integrity remains intact.
The Path Forward
As Ghana faces unprecedented security challenges, the need for decisive leadership in the Ministry of Defence has never been more pressing. Rev Fordjour’s comments reflect a growing sentiment among citizens about the urgency of effective governance in safeguarding the nation.
Public Reaction
The discourse surrounding this issue continues to gain traction on social media, with many supporting Rev Fordjour’s call for prompt action. The choice of leadership in the Defence Ministry will undoubtedly have lasting implications for Ghana’s national security strategy.
