A Historic Gathering of Mourners
Tens of thousands of people have converged in Kisumu, Kenya, to honor the memory of the late Raila Odinga, the country’s former Prime Minister. His body lies in state at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium, a significant venue in his political stronghold, following a state funeral held in Nairobi.
Emotional Tributes at the Stadium
The atmosphere at the stadium was deeply emotional, with many attendees expressing their grief and admiration. Numerous mourners suffered injuries as they rushed to catch a glimpse of the coffin, leading to first aid being administered on site. “I have come here to mourn an icon of Africa,” shared a tearful mourner, Dixon Ochieng.
Odinga’s Legacy of Resilience
As Kenyans flocked to the stadium dressed in the orange of the Orange Democratic Movement, they carried branches—symbols of mourning within the Luo community, which Odinga belonged to. At least five people have died in related mourning events, underscoring the deep impact of Odinga’s passing on the nation.
A Leader Who Shaped Democracy
Raila Odinga was a pivotal figure in Kenya’s politics, known for his persistent efforts to bring democracy to the country. Despite losing five presidential campaigns, including the last one three years ago, he remained a symbol of hope and resilience. Following the disputed 2007 election, he became Prime Minister in a coalition government, influencing Kenya’s political landscape significantly.
Personal Reflections on a Trailblazer
Mourners like Jacob Omondi and David Ouma reflected on Odinga’s transformative impact on Kenya. “He gave us democracy, making our voices heard,” stated Omondi. Ouma added, “I learned from Raila the importance of resilience; he always stood up to try again.”
Tributes from Global Leaders
The tributes to Odinga extended beyond Kenya’s borders, with dignitaries such as former US President Barack Obama expressing their condolences. Obama hailed Odinga as a “true champion of democracy,” noting his sacrifices for the country’s freedom and self-governance. “He consistently prioritized the needs of his nation over personal ambitions,” Obama declared.
Final Farewell
Raila Odinga is scheduled to be laid to rest on Sunday at his farm in Bondo, approximately 60 km west of Kisumu. In line with his wishes, the family has expressed a desire for a swift burial, ideally within 72 hours of his passing.
