The Forces of Hell Unite: Blizzard Entertainment Developers Form Union
In a significant move within the gaming industry, over 450 game developers from Blizzard Entertainment, known for the iconic Diablo series, have officially voted to unionize under the Communication Workers of America (CWA).
The vote wrapped up on the evening of August 27, 2025, allowing employees to express their desire to unionize either by signing union cards or through an online platform. With this successful vote, the developers will be represented by CWA local 9510 in Irvine, CA, Local 1118 in Albany, NY, and Local 6215 in Austin, TX.
Diverse Representation in Union
This newly formed union encompasses a broad spectrum of roles within Blizzard, including designers, engineers, artists, and support staff. Kelly Yeo, a game producer and key member of the organizing committee, stated that the recent mass layoffs at Microsoft played a substantial role in motivating their unionization efforts. “With every subsequent round of mass layoffs, I’ve witnessed the dread in my coworkers grow stronger,” Yeo remarked. “It feels like no amount of hard work is enough to protect us—this is just the first step in our fight against the fear that permeates our industry.”
Living with Uncertainty
Ryan Littleton, a game designer and fellow organizing committee member, shared his own unsettling experience during this turbulent time. “The day after the third round of mass layoffs, I walked into the office, and my badge was denied at the cafeteria door,” he recalled. “For a moment, I thought that missing breakfast might signify my inclusion in that round of layoffs. Luckily, it was just a technical issue, but it’s a constant worry no one should have to face.”
Addressing Layoff Pressures
The developers unionizing have emphasized that this initiative aims to alleviate the “constant pressure of layoffs” that continues to affect their well-being. Many on the organizing committee expressed concerns over the “passion tax” that has hindered advancements in workers’ rights. “At some point, you must choose between fight or flight. Forming a union is us standing our ground,” remarked senior software engineer Nav Bhatti.
California: A Hub for Organizing
Jason Justice, president of CWA Local 9510, commented that this unionization reflects a larger trend in California, which has emerged as a center for video game worker organizing. “What’s happening here is part of a much larger story about reshaping an industry that has long neglected its labor. Entertainment workers across various sectors are uniting to secure a seat at the decision-making table,” he stated.
Continued Developments Expected
As discussions around labor rights continue to evolve, Game Developer has reached out to Blizzard Entertainment for comments regarding this significant development and will provide updates once a response is received.
