Life-Changing Technology for the Blind
Andy Evans, a 57-year-old man from Larkhall near Bath, has dramatically improved his quality of life after being registered blind. After leaving his night job at a Morrison’s supermarket due to vision loss, he has since returned to work, thanks to newly acquired AI glasses that he describes as “life-changing.”
The Power of AI Glasses
The AI glasses, designed by Meta (the parent company of Facebook and Instagram), come equipped with a camera and tiny speakers. This innovative design allows users like Mr. Evans to voice-activate commands, making everyday tasks much more manageable.
He mentions that the glasses help him order food at restaurants and identify potential obstacles in his path, making navigating spaces easier and more efficient.
Celebrity Voice Options
One of the unique features of these AI glasses is the ability to select from various celebrity voices. Mr. Evans has chosen Dame Judi Dench’s voice, humorously noting that she refers to him as “James Bond.”
A New Purpose in Life
Having returned to work at the Sight Support West of England charity, Mr. Evans is now helping others adapt to vision loss. He expressed to BBC Radio Bristol, “I was really stuck doing a lot of things,” emphasizing how the glasses have transformed his ability to interact with his surroundings.
Expert Opinions on Technological Advancements
Robin Spinks, head of inclusive design at the Royal National Institute of Blind People, praised the glasses as a significant advancement in assistive technology. As someone who is also registered blind, he shared how the glasses allow for detailed descriptions of environments, from rooms to unique scenarios like visiting a zoo or a beach.
He remarked, “AI is advancing rapidly, and the market for smart glasses is still in its infancy. But the potential is enormous.”
