Vandenberg’s Inspiring Journey Through Adversity
Vandenberg’s life experiences with gun violence and adverse management have significantly reshaped her perspective on life, her activism, and her modelling career. These trials have fueled her determination to become an inspirational figure for young women everywhere.
A Traumatic Experience in Colombia
In 2021, Vandenberg traveled to Colombia for a new modelling contract, but her experience took a harrowing turn. After a brief self-isolation period due to COVID-19 restrictions, she found herself held at gunpoint, where the assailant attempted to shoot her. “I was really, really lucky to have survived that,” she reflects. An unexpected intervention saved her life when the gunman’s aim was compromised.
Finding Strength in Chaos
After the traumatic incident, Vandenberg spent the day in shock, navigating the complexities of police reports while grappling with the language barrier in a foreign country. Unfortunately, her modeling agency failed to support her during this critical time, refusing to give her the following day off to recover from her trauma.
Lessons Learned
Reflecting on her challenging experience, Vandenberg emphasizes the importance of setting boundaries and standing up for oneself. “My agency at the time was terrible,” she states, underscoring the need for aspiring models to find supportive environments. Her journey has made her passionate about being that supportive figure for young girls and women in the industry.
A Vision for the Future
One of Vandenberg’s aspirations is to open a boutique modelling agency in Lethbridge, aimed at guiding models on their journey with integrity and compassion. “I want to be that supportive person,” she explains. She encourages models to be true to themselves, advocating for their beliefs and comfort in any professional setting.
Raising Awareness Against Gender-Based Violence
Vandenberg is also committed to raising awareness about gender-based violence, challenging the misconception that it occurs only abroad. The Canadian Women’s Foundation highlights the alarming statistic that one woman or girl is killed every 48 hours in Canada due to gender-based violence. Vandenberg is planning a cross-Canada tour to shed light on this critical issue and assist victims in finding local resources.
Empowerment and Education
“If something like this happens to you, I hope that people feel empowered to leave,” says Vandenberg, advocating for awareness of available resources in local communities. With her experience as a crisis support worker in the Lethbridge Police Service Victim Services Unit, she understands the importance of empowerment and education.
A Bright Future Ahead
Amidst her advocacy work and modelling career, Vandenberg has applied to law school, furthering her commitment to making a difference. She has also qualified for Miss Universe 2025, set to occur in Bangkok on November 21, 2025, a platform she aims to use for further advocacy and change.
