Edmonton Welcomes Its First Nordic Spa Wellness Center
After much anticipation and a rezoning debate at city hall, Edmonton is set to unveil its inaugural Nordic spa wellness center. This development marks a significant addition to the city’s wellness offerings.
Scandinave Spa: A New Gem on the North Saskatchewan River
The Ontario-based Scandinave Spa is advancing plans to build its fifth Canadian location along the banks of the North Saskatchewan River in southwest Edmonton. Previously owned by the University of Alberta trust, this stunning property promises to be a serene escape for both residents and visitors.
A First for Alberta
As Scandinave Spa’s first venture in Alberta, this new facility joins four other locations across Canada, including two in Quebec and others in Ontario and British Columbia. Each site embodies the essence of relaxation and rejuvenation, offering a unique experience influenced by its surroundings.
Staying True to Sustainability
According to Travel Alberta, the selection of Edmonton for Scandinave’s next spa was inspired by the city’s blend of urban life and natural beauty. The development prioritizes sustainable construction and operations, aiming to enhance the natural environment along the river valley.
Community Impact and Economic Growth
Vincent Damphousse, co-founder of Scandinave Group and former Edmonton Oilers player, emphasized the project’s importance for the city: “This is more than just a development; it’s a way to give back to the community.” The spa is set to open in 2028, with an expected economic impact of approximately $121 million over its first decade. Additionally, the project aims to generate about $18 million in tax revenue during that time.
Job Creation and Local Benefits
Construction of the spa is projected to create around 330 temporary jobs, followed by 52 permanent full-time positions once the facility is operational. According to Edmonton Global CEO Malcolm Bruce, this exciting addition will enhance the quality of life for residents while attracting further investment to the region.
Historical Context of the Site
The chosen site, a 10.5-acre lot in the Brander Gardens neighborhood, was previously bequeathed to the University of Alberta by Sandy Mactaggart in 2010. While the university found that the existing mansion did not meet educational needs, the decision was made to clear the land for future development, paving the way for the spa.
Future of Wellness in Edmonton
The new Scandinave Spa promises to elevate Edmonton’s status as a wellness destination, contributing to the region’s vibrant community and drawing attention from potential investors. As other attempts to establish a Nordic spa in the area have failed, this project represents a successful leap forward for wellness tourism in Edmonton.
With a vision of tranquility and rejuvenation at its core, the Scandinave Spa is poised to become a cherished retreat for all who seek relaxation and renewal in the heart of Edmonton.
