A Crowning Achievement
As the lights faded on the 2025 Montgomery County 4-H Queen Contest, the previous queen, Jessica Bradley, stood center stage wearing her crown, but this time she was bestowing a new title. She placed the crown on Peri McClaskey, marking a moment years in the making for the new queen, who has deep family roots in the 4-H community.
Legacy and Inspiration
“I feel like it’s in my blood,” McClaskey shared. Her family legacy includes an aunt, a cousin, and her sister all holding 4-H queen titles, which inspired her to pursue the crown in her final year. With a decade of involvement through the Walnut Willing Hands club, she is familiar with the dedication required during the fair week.
New Responsibilities as Queen
With her new title comes a greater level of responsibility. McClaskey noted, “Now that I have this big crown and a sash that says ‘Miss Montgomery County,’ many look to me for guidance.” Her leadership role entails answering questions and overseeing her court, further shaping her skills as a leader.
Reflections from the Previous Queen
Jessica Bradley, who completed her 4-H journey last year and is now pursuing studies in atmospheric science at Purdue University, understands the weight of the crown. She emphasized the exhaustion of fair week but also the joy it brings: “I look back on my pictures and wish I could go right back.”
Community Engagement and Leadership
Beyond the fair week, McClaskey’s role continues throughout the year. She prepares to represent Montgomery County in the Indiana State Fair Queen Contest in January, while actively engaging with the community and inspiring the next generation of 4-H members. “It’s wonderful to see young kids excited to meet you,” she expressed.
Preparing for the Contest
Leading up to the pageant, contestants dedicate Sundays to practice, interview sessions, and rehearsals. Bradley recalled her own uncertainties before competing but expressed gratitude for having taken the risk. “I learned that taking a chance can lead to rewarding experiences,” she said.
A Bright Future Ahead
McClaskey’s vibrant personality is contagious as she engages in various activities from showing dairy goats to helping the community. After her summer of 4-H excitement, she aims to advance her career in nursing at St. Elizabeth School of Nursing. Her mantra, inspired by Bradley, captures the essence of her reign: “The best queen you can be is yourself.”
