Afia Pokua Criticizes Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa Over Embassy Closure

    Introduction to the Controversy

Ghanaian media figure Afia Pokua, popularly known as Vim Lady, has publicly criticized the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. Her remarks come in response to the closure of Ghana’s Embassy in Washington, D.C., which she claims is rooted in unsubstantiated allegations of corruption.

    Claims of Improper Closure

Vim Lady emphasized that Ablakwa acted irresponsibly by closing the embassy without thorough investigations to confirm his claims of corruption. During her broadcast on Okay FM’s Gyaso Gyaso show on June 9, 2025, she argued that the only issue raised by the Foreign Affairs Ministry was a conflict of interest, not corruption, which she believes does not warrant an embassy closure.

    Concerns About Political Motivations

The media personality accused Ablakwa of using this situation for social media clout, asserting that his actions are not only illegal but politically irresponsible. She referenced Ablakwa’s own past when he faced corruption accusations during his vetting process and noted the support he received despite the lack of evidence against him.

    Disputing the Corruption Allegations

Vim Lady dismissed Ablakwa’s claims regarding corruption at the embassy. She highlighted that there was a legitimate contract between the embassy and a private company for mailing services. She contended that a conflict of interest does not equate to corruption and expressed her dismay at the manner in which Ablakwa handled the situation.

    Repercussions of the Closure

The embassy was shut down on May 26, 2025, in light of allegations involving the visa department. Reports suggested that a local IT worker misappropriated funds by diverting applicants to his own company, which charged unauthorized fees. Following this scandal, all embassy staff were recalled, and the IT department was disbanded pending investigation.

    The Broader Implications

Vim Lady cautioned that this situation could tarnish the image of the current administration. She urged that the politicization of such issues is harmful and called for a more measured approach. She stated, “This over-politicization of every issue is dangerous,” urging Ablakwa to reconsider his actions and their impact on President Mahama’s reputation.

    Conclusion

The ongoing controversy highlights significant tensions within Ghana’s political landscape. As the situation evolves, it remains vital for all parties involved to address allegations responsibly and strive for transparency to maintain public trust in the government.
