Concerns Over Tween Skincare Trends on Social Media
Rising Skincare Obsession Among Preteen Girls
CHICAGO — A new warning has emerged regarding the skincare obsession prevalent among preteen girls on social media platforms like TikTok. Recent research highlights a troubling trend in skincare routines shared by girls as young as 7 years old, often involving products that may not be suitable for their delicate skin.
Study Reveals Potential Risks
According to an investigation, unhealthy skincare practices adopted by tweens could be doing more harm than good, both to their skin and to their parents’ bank accounts. Researchers from Northwestern University created TikTok accounts pretending to be 13-year-olds and reviewed 100 skincare videos featuring young girls, illustrating the scale of this phenomenon.
Ingredients of Concern
The investigation identified that among the top 25 most-viewed skincare videos, there was an alarming average of 11 active ingredients that have the potential to irritate young skin. Ingredients like citric acid, salicylic acid, and glycolic acid appeared frequently, raising concerns among dermatologists.
Limitations of the Research
It is worth noting that this study, which focused on a limited sample of 100 TikTok videos, primarily analyzed the most popular products. As a result, it does not provide a comprehensive view of all skincare offerings available to young users on the platform.
Expert Insights on Tween Skincare
Dermatologist Dr. Brooke Jeffy emphasizes that many skincare products aimed at adults are not beneficial for tweens and can actually harm their sensitive skin. “Most of these products tackle adult skin concerns like wrinkles and hyperpigmentation, which are not relevant for young children,” Dr. Jeffy explained, highlighting the potential risks these products pose to the skin barrier of adolescents.
Neglecting Sunscreen A Concern
Alarmingly, only a quarter of the reviewed videos mentioned the importance of sunscreen. Health organizations like the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Academy of Pediatrics advocate for sunscreen use in all children over six months old, making this oversight particularly concerning.
Financial Implications for Families
In addition to health implications, the financial burden associated with these skincare trends is significant. On average, families spend about $168 on skincare regimens for tweens, leading to an increased financial strain on parents as they navigate this trend.
As social media continues to shape beauty standards and skincare habits, it is crucial for parents and guardians to stay informed about the potential risks and guide their children towards safe and age-appropriate skincare practices.
