Mira Kapoor: From Music to Wellness with Dhun
When Mira Kapoor (née Rajput) was just five years old, she discovered her passion for music by playing nursery rhymes on the piano. Her parents recognized her talent and enrolled her in formal music lessons; however, the structured environment drained her joy, leading her to quit. Despite stepping away from official training, Mira continued to play whenever she encountered a piano. A few years ago, she finally brought a piano into her Mumbai home, which she shares with her husband, actor Shahid Kapoor. Since then, she has embraced self-learning through YouTube tutorials.
A New Venture: Dhun
Recently, music has become a central component of Mira’s wellness initiative, Dhun, which beautifully merges her love for music with the concept of wellness. “An important aspect of wellness is achieving stillness amidst life’s chaos. This is the first step to self-discovery,” she explains while reflecting on her new venture — a luxurious wellness sanctuary located in Bandra, Mumbai. She emphasizes the importance of having spaces where individuals can simply be, such as the resonance room designed for immersing oneself in soothing sounds or enjoying moments of silence.
Roots of Wellness
Hailing from Delhi, Kapoor shares that wellness practices have been integral to her life since childhood. Early rituals from her mother included starting the day with a wholesome breakfast and applying oil to her hair. Now at 30 and a mother of two, Mira’s daily routine includes drinking a glass of water infused with soaked raisins and saffron each morning, and she ends her day by applying ghee or oil to her feet. While she has journeyed to renowned wellness centers globally, she acknowledges that the busy demands of motherhood limit her time for week-long retreats.
The Birth of an Idea
The inspiration for Dhun stemmed from a conversation with a friend about the necessity of a wellness space that combines East’s touch-based practices with West’s technological advancements. “My friend challenged me, ‘Why don’t you create one?’” recalls Kapoor. Initially hesitant due to her shifting identity as a mother, she decided to take her friend’s advice to heart, setting goals and putting her dreams down on paper.
Building a Wellness Sanctuary
Over the last two years, Mira dedicated herself to developing Dhun from scratch. She believes that while wellness trends are on the rise, the essence of healing — particularly through touch — has often been overlooked or deemed outdated. “People dismiss ancient practices as just ‘nuskhas,’ but many of them are rooted in Ayurveda, which is a legitimate science,” she says. With Dhun, she aims to incorporate timeless wisdom from Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and holistic therapies, while also integrating cutting-edge technologies like cryotherapy and red light therapy to promote cellular regeneration and accelerate recovery.
A Personal Touch
The design of Dhun has been crafted by architect Ankur Khosla, who also designed Mira’s home. The sanctuary features custom-woven fabrics from Bandhini Home and a unique signature scent developed in collaboration with Seva Home. “Every detail, from the carpets to the lighting, has been personally selected by me. I envision Dhun as an extension of who I am,” she explains, highlighting her commitment to creating a harmonious environment.
Future Aspirations
In addition to launching Dhun, Mira recently introduced her skincare brand, Akind. When asked about her future plans, she describes this stage of her life as akin to caring for her “fourth baby.” She expresses her desire for both her skincare line and wellness sanctuary to flourish, aiming for Dhun to become a pioneering urban wellness center in India and beyond, rooted in healing, harmony, and the integration of holistic practices with the best modern techniques.
