Shashi Tharoor Confronts Party Criticism During International Diplomacy Efforts
In recent days, Congress member Shashi Tharoor has encountered backlash from his party colleagues regarding his supportive comments about the Indian government’s stance on terrorism. Following remarks by fellow Congress leader Jairam Ramesh that criticized MPs for being “roaming,” Tharoor emphasized his commitment to focusing on India’s global message on terrorism during his current diplomatic mission.
Tharoor’s statements were made in response to media inquiries concerning the criticism from fellow Congress members while he leads one of seven all-party delegations abroad. The delegation, currently in Brazil, aims to communicate India’s position and highlight Pakistan’s role in terrorism following the recent Pahalgam terror attack.
When challenged about the criticisms, Tharoor stated, “This is a time to focus on our mission. In a thriving democracy, comments and criticisms are inevitable, but we cannot afford to dwell on them now.” He expressed his intention to engage with his colleagues and the media upon his return to India, underscoring the urgency of delivering India’s message to international audiences.
On a previous occasion, Jairam Ramesh questioned the efficiency of Congress MPs in light of the ongoing terrorism issues, saying, “Our MPs are roaming, yet terrorists are also roaming.” This pointed remark reflects the internal conflict within the party regarding how to address matters of national security and public safety.
Despite receiving praise from some government officials for his defense of India’s position during conflicts with Pakistan, Tharoor’s comments have not been well-received by certain members of Congress. During a recent contentious moment, Ramesh remarked that Tharoor’s views do not accurately reflect the official stance of the party.
Historically, the Congress party had initially supported the government’s actions following the Pahalgam attack, but subsequently shifted its rhetoric, demanding explanations regarding ceasefire agreements under U.S. mediation.
Tharoor’s support for the government’s approach has further complicated his standing within the party. His comments made in Panama, where he highlighted India’s military responses to terrorist threats, led some Congress leaders to label him as the “superspokesperson of the BJP.” Tharoor argued that India’s proactive measures are vital for national security, illustrating a significant shift in counter-terrorism strategy by referencing India’s surgical strikes and operations beyond traditional borders.
As Tharoor continues his diplomatic mission, the party’s internal dynamics remain tense, raising questions about the future coherence and messaging of Congress on security matters. As he returns to India, discussions with his colleagues will undoubtedly be essential in addressing the party’s reactions to his international engagements.
