Unveiling the Dyson PencilVac
Dyson has recently launched what it touts as the “world’s slimmest vacuum cleaner.” Enter the PencilVac, a sleek new gadget that resembles a broom more than a traditional vacuum. With an impressive, ultra-thin handle measuring just 38mm in diameter—similar to the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer—this innovative machine promises powerful cleaning in a compact form. Weighing in at less than four pounds, the PencilVac features Dyson’s smallest and fastest motor to date.
A Replacement for the Omni-glide
The PencilVac is designed as a successor to the slim Dyson Omni-glide, which made waves in 2021 with its dual spinning brushes that adopted a multi-directional suction approach. The new PencilVac not only outshines the Omni-glide in slimness and weight but also incorporates four innovative spinning brush bars termed Fluffycones, enhancing its cleaning capabilities.
Fluffycones Design Innovations
The Fluffycones are uniquely designed in a conical shape, allowing long hairs to slide towards the narrow end, preventing them from tangling around the brushes. This thoughtful design includes protrusions on the sides for improved edge cleaning. Additionally, green LED lights illuminate dust and dirt, ensuring you can see exactly what areas need attention.
Powerful and Efficient Motor
One of the standout features of the PencilVac is its innovative motor, which measures only 28mm in diameter but achieves an impressive spinning speed of 140,000 RPM. This powerful motor generates 55AW of suction, making it highly effective for cleaning tasks. Complementing this is a new two-stage dust filtration system designed to prevent clogging, ensuring sustained performance as you clean.
Smart Features and Design
The PencilVac is equipped with a magnetic floor dock for convenient charging and storage. A small LCD screen displays the cleaning mode and battery life estimates. For the tech-savvy user, it’s also Dyson’s first vacuum that connects to the MyDyson mobile app, offering access to advanced settings, filter cleaning alerts, and detailed maintenance instructions.
Trade-offs of the Slim Design
While the slim design of the PencilVac offers numerous advantages, it has some limitations. Primarily designed for hard floors, the cleaning head is not optimized for carpeting. Although alternative attachments such as furniture and crevice tools are available, it does not convert into a shorter handheld vacuum. Additionally, the runtime is limited to 30 minutes at the lowest power setting, although swappable batteries will be available for extended cleaning sessions.
Availability and Pricing Information
Currently, Dyson has not disclosed pricing details for the PencilVac. The vacuum is set to launch in Japan later this year, with plans for an eventual release in the United States by 2026. Stay tuned for updates on pricing and more information as it becomes available.
