Yogi Adityanath Denounces Casteism in Military Commentary
New Delhi
Caste-Based Comments Stir Controversy
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has lashed out at Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav over his remarks regarding the treatment of military personnel based on their religion and caste. Yadav suggested that Colonel Sofiya Qureshi faced criticism from a BJP minister due to her Muslim identity, while Wing Commander Vyomika Singh was untouched because of her perceived Rajput background.
Operation Sindoor and Press Briefings
Both Colonel Qureshi and Wing Commander Singh have actively participated in multiple press conferences discussing Operation Sindoor, which provides details about India’s military operations against terror bases in Pakistan since May 7. Their accounts underline the bravery and professionalism inherent in the Indian armed forces.
Critique of BJP’s Political Strategies
In a separate commentary, Yadav criticized the BJP’s Tiranga Yatra, alleging that its primary aim is electoral advantage rather than national unity. He condemned comments made by Madhya Pradesh minister Vijay Shah regarding Colonel Qureshi, asserting that these remarks reflect a prejudiced attitude fueled by casteist undertones.
Yogi Adityanath’s Response
Adityanath firmly rebuffed Yadav’s comments, arguing that reducing a brave soldier’s valor to caste considerations reveals a narrow-minded approach. He emphasized that the Indian army’s ethos is rooted in national service, transcending caste and religion. “The uniform of the army is not seen through a ‘casteist lens’,” he stated, reinforcing his point on social media.
Mayawati Criticizes Both Parties
Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati echoed the sentiments of rejecting caste-based judgment within the military sphere. She criticized both the BJP and Samajwadi Party, calling their statements regarding soldiers based on religion and caste as unfair and shameful. “This type of rhetoric is condemnable,” she remarked in a Hindi post.
Minister’s Controversial Remarks
Vijay Shah’s earlier remarks at a rally in Indore sparked outrage as they were viewed as communal and derogatory. During his speech, he referenced a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, attempting to juxtapose it with the Indian military’s retaliatory measures involving Colonel Qureshi. His comments drew significant backlash for being insensitive and inflammatory.
Judicial Repercussions and Public Backlash
The Supreme Court has reprimanded Mr. Shah for his statements, with Chief Justice BR Gavai emphasizing that those in constitutional roles must maintain decorum in their speech. He questioned the minister’s judgment and urged him to apologize, highlighting the need for sensitivity when discussing issues related to the armed forces and communal tensions.
