YSR Congress Accuses Naidu of Neglecting Vijayawada for Amaravati Development
The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has voiced strong criticism against N Chandrababu Naidu, the president of the Telugu Desam Party and Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, for what they perceive as his neglect of Vijayawada. This city holds significant historical and cultural value, and YSRCP claims that Naidu’s focus on developing Amaravati as the capital has come at the expense of Vijayawada.
Claims of Discrimination Against Vijayawada
During a press briefing at the YSRCP’s central office, Devineni Avinash, the NTR district president, alleged that Naidu’s policies reflect a personal bias against Vijayawada, stemming from its historical connections with NTR. This alleged bias has led to what the party claims are discriminatory practices that jeopardize the city’s development.
Development Projects in Limbo
Avinash pointed out that Naidu has not initiated any development projects in Vijayawada over the past year, which he claims reveals the Chief Minister’s lack of interest in the city’s progress. “There hasn’t been a single new project during this coalition period,” he stated, emphasizing the need for immediate action.
Concerns Surrounding Gannavaram Airport
One of the most alarming issues raised was the potential closure of Gannavaram Airport. Avinash accused Naidu of conspiring to undermine Vijayawada’s infrastructure by relocating the Health University to Amaravati. “What will Chandrababu Naidu say to the farmers who sacrificed their land for the airport?” he questioned, highlighting the injustice felt by local farmers.
Impact of Land Acquisition Plans
Adding to the concerns, YSRCP criticized plans to acquire land in Ibrahimpatnam for a new sports city. This move, Avinash warns, threatens local businesses, particularly those involved in the crusher industry, and risks displacing many residents. The party has called for a stop to these plans, urging the government to consider the local populace.
Neglect of Dr. B R Ambedkar’s Legacy
Avinash also took aim at Naidu’s administration for its apparent disregard for Dr. B R Ambedkar. A statue commemorating Ambedkar, valued at Rs 400 crore, and the adjacent Smruthivanam—developed by current Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy—have reportedly received little attention. “No garland has been offered to Ambedkar in a year,” Avinash lamented, pointing to the removal of lighting during national holidays as further evidence of neglect.
A Call for Balanced Development
While the YSR Congress Party is supportive of Amaravati’s development, Avinash has made it clear that they will not permit the destruction of Vijayawada in the process. “We demand that Naidu prioritize the development of Vijayawada, safeguard its institutions, and respect its rich heritage,” he concluded, calling for a more equitable approach to regional development.
