Introducing the ESR MagMouse: A Game-Changer for Travelers
Have you ever wished for a mouse that could effortlessly adhere to your laptop while you’re on the go? The newly launched ESR MagMouse on Kickstarter might just be the solution you’re looking for. Having tested this innovative mouse for a week at a price of $36, I was pleasantly surprised by the practicality it offers.
Lightweight and Travel-Friendly Design
The ESR MagMouse is a featherlight travel mouse, weighing just 75 grams (2.65 oz). It comes equipped with both Bluetooth and 2.4GHz wireless connectivity, along with a compact built-in USB-C cable for hassle-free charging. The clever design includes magnets embedded in its frame, allowing it to stick securely to various surfaces. The USB-C cable conveniently folds into the mouse’s casing and features a designated slot for the 2.4GHz USB-A dongle, making it easy to pack and go.
Compatibility Considerations
While ESR is recognized for its MagSafe accessories, it’s crucial to note that the MagMouse is not a MagSafe product. It does not effectively magnetize with all MagSafe or Qi2 devices. For instance, I found that it did not stick to my iPhone or Samsung Galaxy, although it does lightly adhere to fridges and compatible metal rings. ESR advises against using it with those rings for safety reasons.
The Magnetic Docking Experience
The MagMouse is specifically designed to work with ESR’s magnetic laptop docking pad. This accessory is a bit bulky, as it contains two pins that secure the mouse in place. However, it’s important to understand that the mouse must not be used as a handle to lift the laptop or force open a stiff lid.
Sticky Gel for Enhanced Stability
The docking pad features a washable and reusable sticky gel surface that provides excellent grip after multiple uses. While this ensures the mouse stays firmly in position, it can make sliding your laptop into compact sleeves a bit of a challenge.
Performance and Features
In terms of functionality, the seven-button, 4800dpi mouse performs well. Although I haven’t yet tested its impressive 160-hour battery life or the quick charging feature—”1 minute charge for four hours use”—I appreciate the overall responsive feel of the buttons. They operate quietly while maintaining sensitivity, and the Bluetooth Swift Pair feature allows for quick pairing with my laptop.
Room for Improvement
As a MagSafe accessory vendor introducing a magnetic mouse, one wonders why ESR didn’t extend the capabilities to wireless and magnetic charging, or compatibility with a broader range of magnetic gadgets. While the MagMouse is suitable for office environments, it might not be ideal for all travel situations. Opting for a steel ring on my laptop could facilitate the attachment of other accessories, such as a MagSafe SSD.
Final Thoughts on the ESR MagMouse
The good news is that the MagMouse also adheres nicely to other magnetic surfaces, such as my Shinewee double magnet ring. ESR anticipates that shipping to Kickstarter backers will commence on June 6th. As with any crowdfunded product, it’s wise to approach with caution. While the risk is generally low for established products on a short timeline, the changing landscape of import tariffs can impact delivery.
