Empowerment Through Pageantry at Spelman College
Showcasing Talent and Spirit
Beauty pageants at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) serve as more than mere competitions; they are vibrant celebrations of students’ beauty, intellect, and school spirit. According to Kyndal Witherspoon, the co-director of the Miss Spelman pageant, the increasing online attention has instilled a sense of pride in the hard work that goes into organizing such events.
Finding Confidence Through Competition
Witherspoon shared her journey of empowerment, stating, “It’s helped me find confidence in my voice and trusting my gut about making decisions. It’s gratifying to see our efforts and discussions appreciated by so many.” The pageants showcase a talented group of individuals who challenge stereotypes and illustrate their capability and intelligence.
Thriving Community Initiatives
This year, Spelman College hosted multiple beauty competitions, contributing to the excitement surrounding its prestigious pageant. The first-ever Mr. and Miss Afrolatinidad pageant, organized by a student group promoting Afro-Latin culture, took place on March 24, further enriching the cultural representation within the college community.
Capturing Moments on Social Media
Social media has played a significant role in amplifying the pageant experiences. A popular TikTok account captured the choreographed performances of candidates during Morehouse College’s Miss Black and Gold pageant, showcasing the energy and enthusiasm of participants. Competitors like Nia Givan, crowned Miss Black and Gold, expressed the importance of making a positive impression for online audiences.
Highlighting Diversity and Excellence
Ayden Palucha, a first-generation college student who was named Mr. Afrolatinidad, hopes that his title will draw attention to the ethnic diversity that exists at HBCUs. He reflected on his motivation to participate, stating, “I did it to show my father, a first-generation immigrant from El Salvador, that there is a place where we are celebrated and greater than stereotypes suggested.”
Personal Growth and Future Aspirations
Participating in pageants has enabled students to refine their skills and prepare for future endeavors. Givan stated that competing not only taught her patience and grace but also encouraged her to pursue her aspirations in performing arts. The support from online audiences has fueled her determination, indicating the broader impact of these competitions beyond the stage.
